The Canoe Place Inn

A community strives to preserve its history

The purpose of this page is to raise awareness about the significance of the Canoe Place Inn to the hamlet of Hampton Bays, the Town of Southampton and the greater Long Island, NY, region. The Inn is currently under threat of demolition. To prevent this loss, we have created a community action and awareness plan to help save it. Our efforts to rally support for the Inn's preservation include:

Did You Know?

The Canoe Place Inn...

  • Is the oldest continually operating inn site in New York State

  • In 1739, Jeremiah Culver opened a tavern and stagecoach stop exactly where the Canoe Place Inn is located today

  • Some have said that the Canoe Place Inn was chartered by her Majesty Queen Anne

  • World Heavy Weight Champion John L. Sullivan trained for his fight with Gentleman Jim Corbett in 1892 here

  • Was host to Governor Al Smith for more than 30 years

  • A British Fort was located at the rear of the Inn property

  • Was one of the 'watering holes' on Long Island during the Roaring 20s

  • Famous bootleggers and gangster Dutch Schultz and Waxey Gordon were regulars

  • Major John Andre visited the Inn and may have produced a map of the area while staying there

  • Was designed by famous architect William L. Bottomley

  • Lucille Ball, Desi Arnez, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, Cary Grant, John L. Sullivan, Babe Ruth, Van Campen Heilner, Helen Hayes, Lou Gehrig, Gary Cooper, William K. Vanderbilt and Henry Huddleston Rogers, Jr. and others were all guests
