As it is once again Women’s History Month, I figured I’d highlight a woman whose name may be familiar to you. Sorry to say, we don’t know much about her, but we do know what she did. She wrote books – books about the history of Good Ground, as well as Hampton Bays and Shinnecock.

Helen M. Wetterau, daughter of Daniel & Mathilda, was a summer visitor to our shores, who ultimately became a year round resident, active in our community. She taught Physical Education for the City of New York – probably not the whole city – and she was an author! She was a contemporary of Dr. Emma Bellows and we are unsure whether they were inspired by each other or were in competition with each other. Either way, local history fans are the winner!

1991 Friends of the Library Luncheon
Good Ground Remembered, Shinnecock Hills Long Ago, and Good Ground and it’s Nautical History were three books from this lady. Sadly she was putting the finishing touches on a fourth, which did not go to press, when she passed away in 2001 at the age of 89.
